HOW TO REVIVE YOUR HAIR EXTENSIONS

Danielle Jones • Feb 14, 2021

You can’t expect brilliant results from low quality hair. So your first great decision was to purchase Next To Natural’s premium quality 100% human hair extensions. Our triple-check quality control methods ensure that you get the best hair, every time.

Before we get into how to remedy the situation, it’s important that we look at how this happens, because we all know that prevention is better than cure. While human hair is less prone to drying out and becoming frizzy than synthetic hair extensions, this will still occur. This is largely because our scalps produce a number of nourishing oils, but as the extensions aren’t attached to our heads, they don’t get the benefits of these oils. So the key to revising your human hair extensions is to replicate and replenish the hair with moisture.

Here are our top tips for reviving your Next To Natural premium human hair extensions:

Shampoo

When you are washing your hair extensions, ensure that you are using a high quality shampoo that will add moisture and encourage it to be retained in the hair strands. A sulphate-free shampoo will help here, as these formulas don’t encourage the hair to be stripped of nutrients in order to clean the hair. Sulphates are used to build lather and foam, and though we have become used to the idea that the more foam, the cleaner the hair, often the sulphates are doing more harm than good. Go without the foam if it means retaining moisture. In fact, some sulphate-free shampoos may foam less, but please note this doesn't mean they are doing any less of a job of actually cleaning your hair. Follow this shampooing advice with a conditioner to hydrate each time you shampoo and you'll have lovely soft hair extensions again.

Here are some ingredients found in shampoos that you should never use on your hair extensions:

  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
  • Alcohol Denat
  • Ethanol
  • SD Alcohol 40
  • Propyl
  • Isopropyl
  • Propanol

To summarise, if your hair extensions seem to have go dry, fizzy and look damaged, have a look at the shampoo and the method in which you're washing your hair. Make sure you follow the advice above when washing your hair and your hair extensions will look lush.

Oils and Treatments

With any treatments or oils that you choose to use, ensure that they will actually saturate the hair, and not just sit on top of the strands, giving the illusion of moisture. You can use oils to seal the ends of your hair extensions to smooth and add shine, and the best thing about good oils for your hair is that you only need few drops to saturate the hair strands and reinstate that lovely smoothness. We highly recommend the Next To Natural argan oil to maintain or replenish the softness of your hair extensions. We have added all our recommended products at the bottom of the blog for you.

If you are going to carry out any longer hair or oil treatments on your human hair extensions, as long as not left near any adhesive bonds, the treatment can be left on overnight to fully penetrate the hair shaft and restore moisture levels. Once you have carried out the treatment, you can rinse the hair extensions with your normal shampoo.

Additional measures

Dry and frizzy hair extensions can be caused by washing hair too often, over-styling (including using heat appliances too frequently), and too much exposure to the sun and its UV rays. These are things that you can manage in terms of frequency in order to aid keeping your hair extensions soft. Remember, like we said, prevention is better than cure.

Also make sure you are not brushing your hair extensions too often and too hard. Brushing too roughly will result in damaged extensions that will only last a fraction of the time they should, so always be kind to your extensions while brushing!

Here's how you should be brushing your lovely locks to avoid losing any softness:

  1. Gather all of the hair together in one hand.
  2. Start brushing from the bottom in light up and down motions.
  3. Work your way up the hair as you untangle.
  4. If there's a knot, isolate it and brush it by itself.

Remember that you should never brush your extensions when they're damp or wet. This could severely damage your hair extensions and will result into breakages.
